Use of Negative Space in a Logo Design

Negative space stands for the space that is left unused around an illustrated object in a logo. In short, it is the space that is left unused in a picture and design. We may feel it is unused space, but it plays a critical role in logo design.

Negative space plays an important role in the composition. When we limit the negative space in the logo and add too many components, then the logo may appear clumsy and overcrowded, resulting in distraction. In case we add upon too much of negative space, the design may appear uninteresting.

So, when you are designing a business logo, it is essential to keep in mind the negative space in logo design.

Advantage of using Negative space in a Logo Design:

  • Creativity gets Highlighted: Adding an element of creativity and balance around the negative space in a logo seems catchy and seems to draw attention as consumers appreciate the whimsical nature.

  • Keeps the logo simple: It is ideal to use negative space instead of adding more elements such as font or design to your logo to create depth. Negative space clicks well with limited elements already on the page instead of overcrowding the design.

  • Makes design memorable: No wonder a clever and unique logo sticks to the mind of the target audience rather than something generic. Using negative space creatively results in a logo that draws curiosity and remains etched in the minds of the audience.

  • Customer Engagement: Logos that efficiently utilize the negative space results in creating different optical tricks such as “hidden messages” or images in logos. These fun ways are an attractive way of alluring your customers.

Types of Negative Space:

  • Double Entendres: Such logos mix positive and negative space as one utilizing the empty space around symbol or text and transforming it into negative space illustration.

  • Hidden Images: Many brands utilize the existing negative space in designs and illustrations to cover up the actual image or symbol, adding meaning and connection to their brand. Toblerone is a classic example of it.

  • Typography: Empty space can also be used to provide the borders surrounding the font of the typeface.

Ideas to create a negative space logo:

  • Embrace the Negative Space: Quite often, the negative space gets ignored by us as we focus more on positive space. Depending upon how you use negative space, one can minimize the number of elements on the page without compromising the versatility required.

  • Plan early to add negative space: Instead of pondering over adding negative space at the end, always plan to add it in the beginning. Including the negative space early in the design helps in creating an ideal logo and gives it an organic appeal.

  • Be unique in Yourself: Adding negative space may sometimes give a generic look to your logo. It happens if the design is too conservative. Hence, if you plan to introduce unorthodox designs, be bold, and use unique or outrageous ideas.

Conclusion:

Negative space is an easy and fun strategy for designing unique logos. Apart from making your logo creative, the negative space helps in communicating the company’s brand values and connecting with the target audience.
